In late 2019, Broward Sheriff’s Office investigators recognized a new crime trend – HEAT, otherwise known as high end auto theft. Detectives sprang into action, formulated a plan and addressed the problem. The results have been noteworthy. In 2020, detectives with BSO’s Burglary Apprehension Team (B.A.T.) made 174 arrests, recovered 69 stolen cars and seized 17 firearms.
On the latest episode of the Shop Talk with the Sheriff podcast, Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony is joined by B.A.T. Detective Mike Merrill. The pair discuss the success of B.A.T. in arresting car thieves and car burglars. They also discuss common sense prevention tips for the public to further reduce this crime trend, including:
• Don’t leave your car doors unlocked
• Don’t leave your car keys or fobs in your car
• Don’t leave valuables in your car
• Don’t leave your garage door opener in your car
