Lee County Sheriffs Office – DRIVING IN THUNDERSTORMS

Drivers should exercise extreme caution this evening as heavy rain and thunderstorms may make driving a bit more difficult.

Consider waiting out the storm, when possible. When this is not possible, please consider the following:

Slippery road conditions require drivers to be extremely attentive. Please avoid using cellular devices and avoid any form of distracted driving.

Headlights must be on…hazards lights (flashers) must NOT be used.

Avoid using cruise control. Hydroplaning while using cruise control will make your vehicle extremely difficult to control in an emergency situation.

During storms, oils from the road rise to the surface. Speeding on this slippery surface can result in loss of control and serious collisions.

Allow additional space between you and the vehicle in front of you. Stopping distances increase when traction decreases.

Avoid driving into standing water. As little as six inches of water can damage your vehicle.

Please…drive slowly and safely!
