Republican Senator Mitt Romney made history by voting to convict a sitting President of his own party…
Republican Senator Mitt Romney of Utah became the first senator of either party ever to vote to convict a sitting president of his own party in an impeachment trial. Visibly shaken, emotional and speaking on the floor of the upper chamber, Senator Romney talked of his deep and abiding faith in God and of the oath to which he swore as he joined every Democratic senator in voting to remove President Donald Trump from office for abuse of power over asking the President of Ukraine to investigate a political opponent before releasing foreign aid appropriated by Congress to fight the Russians.
The Republican backlash against Romney was swift and cruel. Donald Trump, Jr. tweeted that Romney was now part of “the resistance” and should be drummed out of the Republican party for daring to vote against his father. Senator Romney is the freshman senator from Utah, served as governor of Massachusetts and was the Republican nominee for president in 2012.
