“We stay committed to removing illegal drugs and guns from the streets of Lee County,” stated Sheriff Carmine Marceno. “My detectives assumed this investigation and immediately got to work. Today, I can proudly say that these two criminals are behind bars where they belong.”

During the past few weeks, detectives with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit conducted an investigation into the drug activity of John Calvin Young (DOB 02/10/1977).

Detectives quickly learned that Young was selling crack cocaine and Fentanyl out of the Days Inn, located on South Cleveland Avenue in Fort Myers. A female, who was later identified as Laura Diane Smith (07/27/1978), was assisting Young with the narcotics sales.

During the investigation, detectives authored and executed a search warrant at the Days Inn hotel room that Young and Smith were conducting their illegal narcotics operation out of. Detectives recovered a Glock 17 firearm, 9.6 grams of cocaine, 26.4 grams of MDMA pills and 3.4 grams of Fentanyl from the room.

Detectives subsequently arrested and charged John Calvin Young with the Sale and Possession of Cocaine, Possession of a Controlled Substance without a Prescription, Sale of a Controlled Substance without a Prescription and Possession of a Weapon by a Convicted Felon. Laura Diane Smith has been charged with the Possession of Cocaine, Possession of a Controlled Substance without a Prescription and Trafficking in MDMA.

Due to being on probation at the time of his most recent arrest, detectives also charged John Calvin Young with Violation of Probation.
