Sheriff Gregory Tony is joined by special guest Lieutenant Colonel Josefa Benjamin for an in-depth discussion on the inner workings of the Broward Sheriff’s Office Department of Detention (DOD) during this episode of Shop Talk with the Sheriff.
During her 28 years of public service with BSO, Lt. Col. Benjamin has been dedicated to ensuring that the thousands of individuals who come through the DOD, from the initial intake process to release, are provided the services and resources they need.
“They arrive with their own set of needs, situations, charges, levels of stress and backgrounds, and we have to meet those needs during that intake process,” Lt. Col. Benjamin said. “We have a commitment to the inmates, their families and the community to get that process right each and every time to keep them safe.”
There are many moving parts involved with the care and safety of inmates in BSO’s custody. Lt. Col. Benjamin sheds light on the intake process, the differences between BSO’s detention facilities, the mental health Crisis Intervention Training and initiatives and how DOD staff are working to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
