St. Petersburg Police Tests New Body Cameras
In an effort to promote trust and transparency Chief Anthony Holloway and four officers began testing body cameras from a company called Body worn.
The cameras are the size of a cellphone and fit in a specially designed front pocket. When an officer pulls his/her gun, the cameras begin pre-rolling, so there is video showing what led up to the officer drawing their weapon. The cameras also have technology that alert nearby supervisors when an officer needs help.
The trial run will go on for the next several weeks. After the pilot period, Chief Holloway will make his recommendation to City Council on whether to proceed with this product.
